Replacing or upgrading your boat’s engine is one of the biggest decisions you will make as a boat owner. At Above the Brine, we provide specialist repower consultations to ensure your next engine is correctly specified, properly installed, and delivers reliable performance for years to come.

Based at Victoria Dock, Caernarfon, we support boat owners across North Wales, Anglesey, the Menai Strait, Chester, Liverpool and the North West.

What Is a Repower Consultation?

A repower consultation is a professional assessment of your vessel and existing propulsion system, designed to identify the most suitable replacement engine, ensure correct horsepower, shafting, gearing and propeller selection, avoid costly compatibility mistakes, and improve reliability, fuel efficiency and resale value.

What’s Included in Our Repower Service

Our repower consultations are conducted by experienced marine engineers with decades of hands-on experience.

Vessel & system assessment includes hull type, displacement and operating profile, existing engine, gearbox and driveline review, engine bed measurements and alignment checks, and electrical, cooling, exhaust and fuel system review.

Engine specification & options cover horsepower and torque calculation, diesel vs petrol vs electric feasibility, compatibility with Beta Marine Inboards and Tohatsu Outboards, plus shaft, propeller and control system matching.

Installation planning includes engine room layout and clearance planning, cooling, exhaust and ventilation requirements, labour scope, timelines and project sequencing.

Why Choose Above the Brine?

We are authorised dealers for Beta Marine Inboards and Tohatsu Outboards, operate a fully equipped boatyard with lifting facilities, and combine chandlery, brokerage, servicing and repower expertise on one site. Our advice is transparent and based on real-world installations in tidal and coastal environments.

Typical Repower Scenarios

We regularly handle failed or seized diesel engines, petrol to diesel upgrades, modern low-emissions outboard conversions, complete Beta Marine inboard replacements, electric outboard feasibility assessments, insurance-led replacements, and pre-sale repower studies.

What Happens Next?

Once you submit the form, our engineering team reviews your details, contacts you to confirm scope and consultation options, and schedules your repower consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a repower consultation cost?

Repower consultations start from £185 + VAT depending on vessel size and complexity. This fee is deducted in full from the final installation cost if you proceed with the project.

Can you assess boats not located at your yard?

Yes. We work with vessels across North Wales, Anglesey and the North West and can arrange off-site assessments where appropriate.

Do you only install engines purchased from you?

No. However, any engine we install must be certified, suitable for marine use and approved by Above the Brine prior to installation. We do not install non-certified or unsuitable customer-supplied engines. Purchasing your engine through us ensures correct specification, warranty handling and full compatibility with your vessel, reducing the risk of delays, failures or additional costs.
