Microfibre cloth for boat cleaning

I Used to Think a Cloth Was Just a Cloth.

A typical autumnal morning in North Wales, flat grey and peaceful. A client (we'll call him Bob) had sent me a photo the night before, worried about a web of fine little marks he'd spotted on his gelcoat and wondering where they'd come from. When I got down there with a torch, I could see exactly what had happened, and it wasn't anything dramatic. He'd been wiping the boat down every fortnight with cloths from a supermarket bulk bag. Cheap, soft to the touch, perfectly ordinary looking. And they'd been doing that, slowly, for months.

"A cloth is just a cloth," he said. I used to agree with him. I don't anymore.

Here's why. Every microfibre cloth is made of tiny threads, and how fine those threads are is measured in something called denier. A strand of silk is about 1 denier. Good detailing cloths use threads far finer than that, sometimes 200 times thinner than a human hair. Fine enough that they don't just sit on top of a scratch or a smear of dirt. They actually get down into it and lift it out, the way a soft brush gets into a groove that a flat cloth can't reach.

That fineness isn't marketing talk either. A well known hospital study found that this kind of ultra fine, split microfibre removed about 95% of surface microbes using nothing but plain detergent, compared to 68% for a normal cotton cloth. The fibre itself is doing the work, not the brand name on the label.

Cheap cloths often use the same word, microfibre, but with much thicker, coarser threads. They look the same. They feel soft in your hand in the shop. But on a boat, they behave completely differently. They drag grit across the gelcoat instead of lifting it away, which is exactly how you get scratches that build up so slowly nobody notices until the light catches them.

Weight matters too, but in a simpler way than most people think. A lighter cloth, around 200 to 300 GSM (your typical grocery store cloth), is best for hard surfaces like glass and stainless steel, where there's no real risk of the cloth itself marking anything. A mid weight cloth, around 300 to 500 GSM, is the workhorse of the kit, good for general interiors and vinyl. But clear plastics like Eisenglass and acrylic hatches are much softer than actual glass, so they get treated more like gelcoat than glass. That means a heavier, plusher cloth, 500 GSM and up, because the extra pile spreads the pressure of your hand over more fibres instead of concentrating it in one place. It's also worth keeping separate cloths for separate jobs. One that's touched the cockpit floor should never touch your clear plastic windows.

Speaking of which, for cleaning boat vinyl and clear plastics like Eisenglass, skip anything dry, and skip ammonia based cleaners altogether. Plenty of water, a soft cloth, and let the dirt float off rather than drag across.

None of this shows up on a quote. Nobody lists their cloths next to the price. But it's worth a quiet question next time someone's valeting your boat for less than you expected, because the cloth in their hand matters just as much as anything in their bucket.

Bob knows now it's part of what we do, and he's handed the maintenance reins over to us. The result is simple. Bob hasn't picked up a new mark since.
